On Friday, July 19, 2019 the Kyrgyz Minister of Health, Mr Kosmosbek Cholponbaev met Mr Jean-Olivier Schmidt, head of the Promotion of Perinatal Health project, on the occasion of the end of his mission in Kyrgyzstan. The Minister thanked Mr Schmidt for his important contribution to the development and strengthening of the Kyrgyz health system and wished him all the best for his upcoming deployment to the World Bank in Washington.
After highlighting the successes of Kyrgyz-German cooperation in improving the health of pregnant women and newborns in the country, he honoured Mr Schmidt’s commitment by bestowing on him the highest award of the Ministry of Health: the Salamattyk saktoononun ardaktuu kyzmatkeri (Outstanding Health Professional) medal.
Mr Schmidt expressed his gratitude to both the Minister and the Ministry as a whole: ‘It is a great honour for me to receive this award for special contributions to the Kyrgyz Republic on behalf of the entire project team, whose work is being appreciated today. This award is an incentive for us to continue delivering quality advisory services in order to meet the high expectations you are placing upon us.’
In just two years, the project has helped to reduce newborn mortality in one pilot region by almost 40% and innovative measures to digitalise the health sector. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has just agreed to fund the project until at least the end of 2022, allowing for the consolidation and further expansion of these promising developments.
The project team would like to thank Jean-Olivier Schmidt for his commitment and wishes him all the best for the future!
